By: Natalia Pérez Mas, Account Executive and Social Media Manager.

On 18th September, we had the opportunity to participate in the conference on innovation in the Spanish Healthcare Sector organized by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) and the Spanish Federation of Healthcare Technology Companies (FENIN) to establish an open dialogue between the key players in the National Health System on this important issue.

The Director of the ISCIII, Dr. Marina Pollán, insisted that for the Institute it is essential to continue consolidating the synergies between the stakeholders that make up the field of innovation in healthcare in Spain, in order to bring the Institute closer to its ultimate objective of caring for health through science. Precisely, during the conference, it became clear that identifying the needs in terms of innovation in a consensual manner, allows progress to be made in the key challenges for healthcare in the 21st century, such as the implementation of precision medicine, where digital therapies play a key role.

Public-private collaboration: key to healthcare innovation

Public-private collaboration was described as essential to boost technological innovation within the NHS. According to several of the experts who participated in the conference, public-private collaboration allows the sharing of knowledge, experiences and disruptive research among all the actors in the biosanitary ecosystem, which in turn, facilitates the transfer of knowledge and contact with the business community.

One of the sessions in the conference organized by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III and FENIN.

Among the participants, we were able to listen to the Scientific Director of the Institute for Biosanitary Research of Granada (ibs.Granada), Dr. María José Sánchez Pérez, who highlighted the evolution of precision medicine in recent years, key in diagnostics, but also in treatments; as well as the Director of Organization of the Biobizkaia Health Research Institute, Dr. María Luz del Valle, who insisted on the benefits of public-private collaboration for the adoption of new healthcare technologies in hospitals throughout Spain. Precisely, among these benefits, the real transfer of knowledge and technology, practically in real time to patients and citizens, was a constant in the success stories that we also had the opportunity to learn about during the course of the day.

Finally, up to six specific interactive and participative sessions were held on specific issues of vital importance for the future of healthcare technological innovation, such as the integration and compatibility of systems, the generation of value in digital therapies, the acceleration of innovation in medical devices, the adoption of innovation by NHS professionals for the benefit of patients, equity in access to new technologies and the provision of high technology in research and development systems.
