Federico Quevedo interviews Ciudadanos MEP Juan Ramón Bauzá on what is happening in Cuba. He complains that the Internet has been cut off by the regime so that no images of the protests can be seen. People cannot see what is really happening.
According to Bauzá, the popular demonstration has brought Miguel Díaz-Canel’s (President of Cuba) maximum repression onto the streets. The MEP explains that the police are on the streets shooting people. In addition, he quotes a Cuban exile. He points out that they are shooting people to death, and they cannot pick up the people in the ground, because they could die themselves.
Without the Internet, the images cannot get out, “which means that the repression is even harsher, if possible, because the dictator Díaz-Canel cannot allow anyone to rebel and lose power,” Bauzá adds.
The internet has played a major role in the spread of the protests, according to the MEP, “the movement has been spontaneous and has spread throughout the island, it has posed a threat to the regime”.
European action
Bauzá called on Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to act “in favor of democracy in Cuba and in condemnation of the regime”. In this respect, he criticized Borrell for “knowing what is happening”.
The Ciudadanos MEP points out that “the drama is that the European High Representative is acting more like a minister of Sánchez, supported by Podemos”.
